Morton Koopa Jr., also known as Big Mouth Koopa Jr. in the cartoons, is a member of the Koopalings, a seven-member clan loyal to Bowser. Originally, the Koopalings were portrayed as Bowser's own children, but this concept was generally dropped in games released after their first appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3. In a 2012 interview, Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that Nintendo's current storyline dictates that they are not actually Bowser's offspring, with Bowser Jr. being his only child.

Morton is easily recognizable due to his darker skin tone and unique white head, which set him apart from his siblings. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, his pale grey shell also became a point of interest, as each of the Koopalings now have their own distinct shell colors. Additionally, Morton has a distinctive star-shaped birthmark on his face, although Larry now sports similar markings.
